A Whole New Health Care

Prescription for a Personal Revolution

I’m Wendy Beall and I want to write you a prescription for a whole new approach to well-being in all areas of your life. Why? Because our modern approach to health care has become a crazily complicated, anxiety producing, and un-health-promoting mess.

Something needs to change, but this is not a mission for the government–it’s an individual mission. That’s why I like to call it do-it-yourself health care reform, because changing the way we deal with our physical and mental well-being is not about politics, it’s about individuals reconnecting with the fact that health is an inside job.

Now, we’ve been advised that the personal is political, which means that as we each change, the world changes. But this kind of change doesn’t work if our focus is on changing the world, trying to fix things we see as broken “out there.” Instead we need to keep our focus where our power is, and that’s on our own choices and behaviors.

That means no one else has to agree with you or be convinced of anything for you to choose to live out of a whole new approach to health care.

The new paradigm requires changing is your mind about how life works–moving from the purely material world approach to a new, blended approach that considers the inner world as important as the outer.

This means opening our minds to new ways of looking at our lives, expanding our assumptions about what’s real and what’s possible, and figuring out what works to get the results we want.

That is what this site is about.

Shifting to a New, Whole-brain Paradigm

In A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, Daniel Pink wrote about the ongoing shift to a new paradigm, a shift from a world dominated by left-brain values and methods, “logical, linear, computerlike,” to “an economy and a society built on the inventive, empathetic, big picture capabilities” of what Pink calls the Conceptual Age.

The new paradigm has a new set of values–inner values–and new ways to accomplish desired aims. Understanding this new paradigm establishes a foundation for a whole new approach to health care–individually, institutionally, and socially.

This new paradigm is bigger than the old one, so it includes what is useful from the old paradigm–because there is much that is useful there–while shifting the focus to a new stet of assumptions and actions. This is not about discarding the former paradigm, but rather about integrating it into a more expansive view of life.

Are You Waiting on the World to Change?

Fortunately there’s no need to wait for the world to change before you change. You can learn to work with and reap the benefits of this new paradigm now.

My mission is to aid in the shift to the new paradigm by helping you to understand and deliberately direct the power of what we currently call the mind-body connection–something you use all the time, but rarely with conscious awareness.

This lack of awareness means you often (maybe even usually) feel that you’re not sure about how to beneficially influence your health. That insecure feeling is what compels you to spend so much time, money, and energy chasing after the latest health advice.

That insecurity is what marketers exploit to get you to buy their products and services or comply with their agendas.

My aim is to encourage you to get back into the driver’s seat instead of feeling like a passenger in your own body and life. My aim is to support you in making your own choices about what works for you, instead of being blown by the winds of the latest health fads and fashions.

It’s Helpful to Have a Clear, Simple Aim

There are lots of things you think you want when things aren’t going as you would like, but really, you only want one thing: to feel good now. That’s the aim of this approach–to help you find and practice ways to move in the direction of feeling good now.

Remembering this is a simple, but powerful, way to stay aligned with the reliable energy of well-being that is natural to you. You’re not seeking something in the future. You don’t need to be in an ongoing pitched battle against your symptoms. Instead, this focus encourages you to find ways to align with the inner sense of well-being that is always available to you now. Finding that alignment is what soothes your symptoms and leads to the relief you’re seeking

By adding this whole, new approach to any treatments you are currently using you can speed healing, reduce or eliminate symptoms, reduce side effects, and save money, time, energy, as well as your sanity, because the only side effects of this whole, new approach are beneficial ones: life improves in many ways when you practice health from the inside out.

Health from the Inside Out

Because the new paradigm regards health as a reflection of your inner energy, which you can learn to deliberately direct, your approach to wellness becomes easier than it is in the current paradigm, which regards our bodies as mechanisms that can be tinkered with endlessly. Using this whole, new approach to health care, you no longer need to pursue health with an endless to do list based on ever-changing advice about how, what, and when to eat, exercise, sleep, etc. Instead, do-it-yourself health care’s foundation focuses on a one-item TO BE list, based on the fact that practicing deliberate relaxation allows your body to regulate itself naturally.

This site offers a buffet of ideas, information, and inspiration for changing how you think about and practice personal health care, plus practical, simple methods that enable you to translate the principles of mind-body health into practices that result in improved well-being, whether you’re working with a doctor or on your own. And because simple doesn’t mean easy (familiar patterns tend to reassert themselves), there are plenty of tips for avoiding the common pitfalls that can leave you feeling stuck.

Learning to deliberately trigger the mind body connection is not intended to replace conventional or alternative medicine. Instead, engaging the inner aspects of well-being works synergistically with any healing modality, conventional or alternative, to improve outcomes and speed healing, and, most importantly, help you feel good now.
